Do Whippets Need Pyjamas?

Whippets are known for their slender build and short coats, so it's not surprising they are very sensitive to cold temperatures. Fleece jumpers or vests are perfect as “pyjamas” for your Whippet and will help keep them warm and comfortable overnight, especially in cooler climates or during winter months.

Why are whippets sensitive to the cold?

Whippets have a thin, single-layered coat. Unlike breeds with double coats, such as Huskies or German Shepherds, Whippets lack the natural insulation they need to stay warm in the cold. They also have a lean physique and low body fat which further adds to their sensitivity to the cold. In contrast with most other breeds, they can be reliant on external sources of warmth.

This isn't just a comfort thing - Whippets are actually at increased risk of hypothermia when exposed to periods of prolonged cold weather. Their body temperature can drop rapidly if they are not properly protected with coats when outside or kept indoors during chilly periods. Letting them have prolonged exposure to the cold can also compromise a Whippet's immune system, making them more susceptible to respiratory infections and other cold-related health issues.

As well as wearing coats when outdoors in cold weather, provisions may need to be made within the home to keep your whippet warm particularly at night or through the winter months. When Whippets are cold, they may shiver, their teeth may chatter or they may become restless. Feeling their ears can be a good indicator to how cold or warm they are. A chilly whippet will naturally gravitate to the warmest part of the house and at night; this is often under the covers with their humans! If you’re not one for sharing your bed, or if a restless whippet is disturbing your night’s sleep, a cosy dog bed, blanket and some well fitting pyjamas are a great solution.

Indoor jumpers are particularly recommended and comforting for older dogs as they may become extra sensitive to the cold as they age, as their muscle and fat reserves decrease.

Choosing the right Whippet night wear

Whippets have a very distinct body shape with a deep chest, slim waist and arched back. To ensure the best fit and comfort we recommend selecting garments that have been specifically designed for Whippets with their unique build and needs in mind.

A lightweight fleece jumper or vest is suitable for night wear and will help your dog maintain their body temperature. Choose a snug comfortable fit to provide good insulation. Not too tight as this will stop your dog's freedom of movement and may cause chafing or discomfort, particularly under the armpits. Equally, not too loose as they could twist and turn during the night or legs could get caught.

A high collar or turtleneck will give extra warmth around their neck area. Pyjamas with a chest covering will keep the all important (and often rather bald underneath) upper body warm. The style and fabric selected can be considered in relation to the temperature.

A cosy whippet = A comfortable whippet = A good night’s sleep for its humans!
